Homeless Vets
I don't believe any veteran should be homeless. There should be some sort of transition program for those being discharged. But the tone of this article makes me wonder what the author left out? Sometimes, circumstances are completely beyond the control of the person involved, as with the case of the young lady who had all her belongings and money stolen.
As a member of the National Guard, Nadine Beckford patrolled New York train stations after the Sept. 11 attacks, then served a treacherous year in the Persian Gulf. But when she returned home from Iraq, she found that her storage locker had been emptied of all of her belongings and that her bank account had been depleted. She believes her boyfriend took everything and "just vanished."Being an Air Force "brat", I knew a lot of people in the military during the Viet Nam era. None of them ended up homeless. There was family, or friends to fall back on. Or a determination to get back on their feet. Most were able to pick up their lives, more or less, where they left off. If Congress can find millions of dollars to build a "bridge to nowhere", why can't they find the needed funds to support our returning troops? Better yet, use those "pork" dollars, instead of wasting it on total crap!
