Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory
Jumpin' Jehosaphat! It's amazing what passes for an "editorial" these days. But then, we are talking about The Capital Times here, so I guess it's to be expected.
Editorial: Fear tactics vs. security
Take a wild guess which party is "targeted".
The President isn't doing what the "cut and run" crowd wants, so he's not interested in a strong national defense? Gimme a break!
Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman, who long ago proved himself a man willing to say anything no matter how absurd that might advantage his party, plumbed a new depth after Connecticut Democratic primary voters chose anti-war challenger Ned Lamont over war-supporting U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman."Plumbed a new depth" as opposed to the DNC chair's intellectual rants, right?
Stung by the defeat of the Bush White House's favorite Democrat, Mehlman declared, "Joe Lieberman believed in a strong national defense, and for that he was purged from his party. It is a sobering moment."What's sobering is that anyone still believes that the Bush White House is interested in a strong national defense.
Under the influence of neoconservative fanatics, energy industry speculators and greedy defense contractors, the Bush administration has bartered off our national security to the highest bidder. And in so doing it has made the whole world a more dangerous place.I wonder, am I a neoconservative fanatic because I prefer to finish the job, instead of cowering under a desk in Massachusetts? Or Conneticutt? Or Madison?
Americans agree that Bush has failed the latest CNN poll finds that 60 percent of those surveyed now describe themselves as opponents of the war, while just 36 percent say they are supporters. And a CNN poll is credible... why? Contrary to their promotions, they are NOT "the most trusted name in America". Oh, I agree people are getting frustrated, but I do NOT believe that any true blooded American wants to back down when times get tough. Yes, men and women are dying. That is one of the horrors of war. But it is a WAR! And it is a part of the "war on terror". With the constant blathering of network news about how horrible things are going, they fail to report the good things that have happened. One small comment about an election, and vivid pictures, and breathless descriptions of the ugliness for 15 minutes has given the a good chunk of the American people false images. Do I want this hell on earth over? Yer durn tootin' I do! I've been invited to a wedding next year, a MILITARY wedding, between two soldiers (male and female mind you) I've never met face to face. And I want to hug that bride! I've got a group of Marines I've been sending junk food and smokes I want to see. But they know their job isn't finished, and do not want to run away, tail tucked between their legs.
Americans are ready for change. According to the CNN survey, 61 percent believe that at least some U.S. troops should be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of 2006 as part of an exit strategy.Yep, I'm ready for a change too! I want to see stick backed Republicans telling those whiners to sit down, shut up, and do the job! Let's face it, I'm not all that happy with the way the leadership of the party has been moving in recent years. So yeah, maybe I do want a change.... a STRONGER change.
That's the position supported by Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold, a frequent target of criticism by Mehlman and the Republican spin machine. Of course, this is the same machine that cannot even hold its own partisans in line any longer as evidenced by Nebraska Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel's recent declaration that the "U.S. occupation of Iraq has degenerated into "a hopeless, winless situation.I'm going on an assumption here. Neither Feingold, nor Hagel was read the story about the Little Engine that Could as a child. So, now, they are unable to remember that if you don't try, you can't do! No, I can't imagine Feingold reading that childrens books. To be rude... he's such a smarmy little b*stard.
But for Americans who want their country to be genuinely secure, respected internationally and functional at home, Lamont's victory is cause for celebration. We might yet get our country back.If he/she means by "get your country back" the Democrats might get the majority, then yes, that is a possibility. I hope not, but it could happen. Especially if we don't get up off our doffs and take congress back from the liberal Republicans, and in an all fire hurry too! I'm ready! Bring it on!
